Our Section has three dinner meetings per year and one field trip. Meetings are usually the third Thursday of October, January and April — the field trip is held in the fall. 2010 Annual Meeting in Charleston, SC – Volunteers needed

AEG Carolinas’ is looking for volunteers to help with planning and running the AEG 2010 Annual Meeting in Charleston, SC, September 20-26. You do not have to live in Charleston to help! This is a great opportunity to get more involved with AEG, and be a part of the biggest event AEG will hold in 2010. A full description of all of the committees can be found here. Spring meeting — 14 April, 2008 Tsunamis - Stealth Killers

  • Speaker: Dr. John J. Clague , 2008 Jahns Jahns Distinguished Lecturer, Tsunamis - Stealth Killers . Read Abstract
  • Topic: Dr. Clague and his graduate students conduct research on a variety of natural hazards, including earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides, and floods. Tsunamis are body waves generated by abrupt vertical displacement of the seafloor or lake floor by earthquakes or
    volcanic eruptions. They can also be produced by landslides or, much more rarely, by asteroid impacts. Tsunamis
    generated by submarine earthquakes (the most common source) travel at subsonic speed across the ocean surface. In the
    open ocean the waves are generally only a few centimeters high, but as they approach shore they rapidly grow in height

  • Speaker: Mr. Gerald Robblee, P.E., of Schnabel Engineering
  • Topic: Lake Townsend Dam in Greensboro, the concrete elements of which began to exhibit cracking less than 15 years after construction. After attempts at repairs, the city retained Schnabel to develop rehabilitation or replacement alternatives, and to design the selected alternative. Jerry will give us the geotechnical and geological background of the dam and dam site, and will describe the wide variety of field techniques used to provide data for the design.
